What documents do you need for remarriage?

On Behalf of | Nov 2, 2021 | Divorce |

If you are planning on getting remarried soon in Maryland, your wedding event may be much the same as your first nuptials, but you also need to be aware of legal obligations that you must go through to tie the knot this time. Whether you are remarrying after divorce or the death of a spouse, you’ll need to prove that those events occurred.

What documents will you need?

As with any marriage, you’ll need to present information that proves your identity, including a driver’s license or a government-issued ID and information regarding your parents, such as their names, birth dates and death dates, if applicable. While you don’t need actual proof, your parents’ information needs to be correct.

If you are remarrying after divorce, you need to present your divorce papers or the divorce decree. You will also need to state the date of the divorce, the county where it was granted, grounds for divorce and whether your former spouse is still alive.

For those getting remarried after the death of a spouse, the process is a little easier. You’ll just have to present your former spouse’s death certificate.

Ensuring you have the proper documents

If you don’t know where your necessary documents are, start the process well ahead of your remarriage date so that you can be in full compliance with family law to get your new marriage license. In addition to what you must present to county officials for your license, you may have other considerations to deal with concerning your former marriage.

It’s a good idea to review the terms of your divorce before you enter into a new marriage so that you don’t have any unpleasant surprises. Doing so can help you avoid unnecessary aggravation and irritation during the exciting time of preparing for your upcoming wedding.
